With the spring weather here, planned capital improvements at Saugatucket Park are progressing. The old chain-link fence along the river has been removed and brush cleared for a scenic view of the river and downtown Wakefield along Main Street, essentially reconnecting the park with the downtown area.
The old walking path has been excavated and a new, wider walkway, is prepped and ready for paving this month. The path has been redesigned to reflect the original 1932 park master plan by the Olmsted Brothers. The basketball court will be replaced in its current location with the addition of pickleball lines and a portable net making the court multi-use to serve more members of our community who desire to be outdoors and active.
The master plan involves future improvements that include new period lighting, benches, and a rain garden.
This project is funded by the Town capital improvement fund and a RI Department of Environmental Management outdoor recreation grant.
