The Town of South Kingstown is advising the public that Indian Lake in will receive treatment to control an aquatic invasive plant, Hydrilla Verticillata, on Tuesday, September 16th 2025. The aquatic weed control treatment is specifically targeted for the invasive nuisance plants and does not harm fish or other wildlife.
Anglers and boaters are advised to avoid using the pond on Tuesday, September 16th when the treatment will be applied as not to impede the state-licensed applicator’s airboat and staff. Signs will be posted with information along the shoreline, but the chemical being applied does not limit or restrict boating, swimming, nor fishing. Indian Lake is a 260-acre lake popular with anglers for Largemouth bass and other warm water species.

The Town of South Kingstown has received grant funding from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management for 2025 and 2026 to treat Hydrilla at Indian Lake from the Bay and Watershed Restoration Fund (Total Project Cost: $280,000; Grant Award: $155,000): This funding is to support second-year and third year herbicide treatment of Hydrilla in Indian Lake. The first-year treatment was organized by RIDEM and was funded by a separate United States Fish & Wildlife Service grant. This project is deemed a priority to control the population to prevent wider spread of this aggressive invasive plant.
