The Town has been made aware that there are cases of people receiving scam emails impersonating Town officials and asking planning board applicants to wire money. Requests such as these are fraudulent. The Town will never request wire transfers or any form of payment via emails.
This is a nationwide fraud campaign that the FBI' Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is aware of. You can file a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center. CLICK HERE to see their service announcement on this matter and to file a report.
What To Do:
- Do not respond to the email.
- Do not click links or open attachments.
- Do not send money of any kind.
- If you already sent money, contact your bank immediately and contact the South Kingstown Police Department at 401-783-3321, press option 7.
How to Spot a Legitimate Town Email:
- Any emails from the Town will always come from the official southkingstownri.gov email domain.
- Scammers are effective at either using public official’s names or similar looking email addresses that appear to be from actual Town officials.
