Farm, Forest & Open Space Program

In conjunction with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the Assessor’s Office administers the Farm, Forest, Open Space Program (FF/OS). The FF/OS tax relief program has several purposes:
  • To encourage the preservation of farm, forest and open space land in order to maintain a readily available source of food and farm products
  • To conserve the State’s natural resources
  • To prevent the forced conversion of farm, forest and open space land to more intensive uses
  • To preserve agricultural heritage
  • To protect scenic views and rural character

Qualifications


To qualify for the "Farm" portion of the program, an application must be submitted to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, Division of Agriculture. The phone number for that department is 401-222-2781. An application for this program can be obtained from the South Kingstown Tax Assessor's Office click on the link below for the R.I.D.E.M. Farm or Forest application and information booklet.

To qualify for the "Forest" portion of the program, a "Forest Stewardship Plan" an application must be submitted to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Division of Forest Environment. The phone number for that department is 401-647-3367. An application for this program can be obtained from the South Kingstown Tax Assessor's Office. The minimum land size for this program is 10 acres.

To qualify for the "Open Space" portion of this program, a property owner must complete an "Open Space" application obtained from the South Kingstown Tax Assessor's Office. The minimum land size for this program is 10 acres of land that has the potential to be developed.
