The Highway Division has direct responsibility for maintenance and improvement of the Town roads, bridges, dams, storm drainage and related infrastructure.
Owners of property adjacent to a public sidewalk are required to clear the sidewalk of snow and/or treat it for ice, within 12 hours after the cessation of a snow/ ice event per Town Ordinance Chapter 16-2. Click here for more information.
Residents of Narragansett and South Kingstown have the option of contracting with a private hauler or taking their trash and recyclables to the Rose Hill Recycling-Transfer Station (RHRTS).
The Wastewater Division operates and maintains a regional wastewater treatment facility located on Westmoreland Street in Narragansett that services portions of South Kingstown and its regional partners, the Town of Narragansett and the University of Rhode Island.
The South Kingstown Water Division provides water for the geographic area south of U.S. Route 1 from Green Hill to east Matunuck, in addition to the Perryville and Middlebridge areas of town.
In 1972, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments, which have come to be known as the Clean Water Act (CWA), came about due to a growing public concern for pollution of our Nation's waters. The goal of the CWA is “to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation's waters”. The Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program is one of the tools provided for in the CWA to achieve its water quality goals. Simply stated, TMDLs establish the maximum levels of pollutants that a water body can absorb without exceeding water quality standards and still maintain its designated uses (i.e. fishable, swimable).
